Moisture and Hydrocarbon Dew Point

Moisture and hydrocarbon dew-point are key parameters for determining the quality of natural gas to comply with international quality standards. On a practical level, excessive moisture or levels of heavy hydrocarbons cause damage to equipment at all stages of the process from upstream to downstream.

Monitoring moisture and hydrocarbon dew point plays an important role in preventative maintenance. All Michell’s moisture in natural gas and HC dew-point analyzers will operate in natural gas with up to 20% hydrogen as part of the composition.

Oxygen in natural gas

In both storage and transport, oxygen analysis provides an early warning of leaks to avoid explosive atmospheres. Trace oxygen is also found as a contaminant in both natural gas and bio-methane, and measurement is necessary to ensure that gas complies with regulatory standards.

Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S)

Controlling levels of hydrogen sulphide protects equipment from corrosion. H2S is a naturally occurring contaminant in natural gas which reacts with moisture to form sulphuric acid. Hydrogen sulphide measurement applications:

  • Preventing corrosion. H2S will combine with oxygen to form highly corrosive acids.
  • H2S is a highly toxic gas. Concentration of H2S is strictly limited under government legislation.
